實木材料的天敵除了蛀蟲以外，還有陽光和水氣，強烈的陽光曝曬容易讓木材變形及開裂，而潮濕的環境也會讓木材的穩定性降低，所以一般室內用的木製家具不建議放置陽台或浴室。
當木材用於室外環境，承受風吹雨淋，需選擇穩定性極高的上等木材種類。以惡劣的海上環境來說，終年陽光曝曬、受海風侵蝕的遊艇及帆船，使用的木材多是航海緬甸柚木，柚木膨脹收縮為所有木材中最少之一，在各種環境不易變形、腐蝕或開裂，其特色為含油量高；越用越光滑，觸感有一種滑潤感，柚木材料中分泌蘊含的木油保護材料本身，因此特別適合製造船甲板，也因其良好的特性現今數量逐漸稀少，漸漸以其他材料代替。
柚木、檜木等高級的木材逐漸稀缺，若非特殊用途，一般常見的室外木材可以選擇南方松或鐵杉木等等，再製過程必須經過防腐處理，方能大大延長木材的壽命，防腐處理有多種程序及做法，像是透過浸泡化學藥劑或天然燒杉及炭化處理，增強木材的穩定性、更耐腐蝕。
Outdoor Wood Preservation
The natural enemies of solid wood materials include insects, sunlight, and moisture. Intense sunlight exposure can cause wood to warp and crack, while humid environments can reduce its stability. Therefore, it is generally not recommended to place indoor wooden furniture on balconies or in bathrooms.
When wood is used in outdoor environments, exposed to wind and rain, it is crucial to choose types of wood with extremely high stability. For harsh maritime environments, such as yachts and sailboats enduring year-round sunlight exposure and sea breeze corrosion, Burmese teak is often used. Teak has one of the lowest rates of expansion and contraction among all woods, making it resistant to deformation, corrosion, or cracking in various conditions. This wood is characterized by a high oil content; it becomes smoother with use, providing a slick feel. The natural oils secreted in teak protect the material itself, making it particularly suitable for making ship decks. Due to its desirable properties, teak is becoming increasingly rare and is gradually being replaced by other materials.
As high-quality woods like teak and cypress become scarce, more common outdoor woods like Southern pine or hemlock can be chosen for general purposes. These woods must undergo preservative treatments to significantly extend their lifespan. Preservative treatments vary and can include soaking in chemical agents or natural methods like charred cedar and carbonization, enhancing the wood's stability and corrosion resistance.
嚴格的防腐程序-燒杉工法
這次客人訂製的木圍籬地點在陽明山，一年四季霧氣瀰漫的山上是對木材最不利的條件，故此次材料需經多道嚴格的防腐程序。
第一道的防腐是ACQ防腐技術，先將木材層層擺放整齊，每層中間用木條隔開，方能將藥劑均勻滲透木材內部，即使剖開木材，木材內仍呈現綠色的防腐痕跡。
第二道防腐加工則在戶外進行，以燒杉工法使木材表面碳化。傳統的燒杉是將木材立成三角柱形，用火在底部煙燻及烘烤，柱形的封閉空間產生煙囪效應，使木板能均勻碳化。現代的燒杉工法則常見使用瓦斯燃料，製造穩定輸出的火力，依木材木紋的排列方向有耐心的烘烤表面，使木材表面碳化，烤過的木材再用冷水沖過，這樣的方式既可以保留天然的木材紋理，也能大大的延長木材的壽命，抗蟲咬、不容易變形。
經過燒杉後的木材別有風味，能營造復古日造建築的份圍，非常迷人。
Rigorous Anti-Corrosion Process - Shou Sugi Ban Technique
For this project, a wooden fence was custom-ordered for a location on Yangmingshan, where the year-round misty conditions on the mountain are particularly challenging for wood. Therefore, the materials required multiple strict anti-corrosion processes.
The first step in the anti-corrosion process involved the use of ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) technology. The wood was neatly stacked layer by layer with wooden strips in between, allowing the chemical agent to uniformly penetrate the interior of the wood. Even when the wood is cut open, green traces of the preservative can still be seen inside.
The second anti-corrosion treatment was conducted outdoors using the Shou Sugi Ban technique, which involves charring the surface of the wood. Traditional Shou Sugi Ban involves setting up the wood in a triangular prism shape and smoking it from the bottom. The enclosed shape of the prism creates a chimney effect, allowing for even charring of the boards. Modern Shou Sugi Ban typically uses gas fuel to produce a stable flame, carefully toasting the surface along the grain of the wood to char it. After charring, the wood is quickly cooled with cold water. This method not only preserves the natural wood grain but also significantly extends the wood’s lifespan, making it resistant to insect damage and less likely to deform.
The wood treated with Shou Sugi Ban has a distinct flavor and creates a charming, vintage Japanese architectural vibe, which is very appealing.

Using Southern Pine to Beautify Old Walls
