Taichung Fu Residence - Masterful Application of Solid Wood Techniques

Before us stands a magnificent door made of Burmese teak, which naturally piques one's curiosity to step inside and explore. We are grateful for the client's trust in Bokto. Beyond the Kassod wood dining table, the Bokto team has taken on several custom furniture challenges from the client. Let’s take a look at how other pieces of solid wood furniture have been utilized, apart from the table.

Estate Main Gate

In historical dramas, the entrance to a grand estate is always guarded by sturdy wooden doors, but in modern residences, such majestic wooden gates are rare, perhaps due to cost considerations. Nevertheless, our client insists on using solid wood as the primary material for their home's main entrance.

The excellent thermal insulation properties of wood ensure the residence remains warm in winter and cool in summer.

Considering that the residential main gate must withstand external weather conditions like wind and sun, as well as cope with internal temperature differences caused by the use of air conditioning, the Bokto team, after thorough evaluation, recommended the use of Burmese teak. This wood is exceptionally environment-resistant due to its natural oils and is also the preferred material for constructing luxury yachts. It is for these qualities that we chose Burmese teak, aiming to create a gate that is both beautiful and durable.

Both the door frame and door panel are made from the same material to ensure uniform expansion and contraction. The door is constructed from thick solid wood planks, combined with modern metal fittings and electronic locks, blending classic aesthetics with contemporary functionality—simply enter a password to unlock it easily.

Moreover, the side of the solid wood door is designed with a vent that can be opened from the inside, making it convenient to check on visitors outside. The interior side of the door is fitted with traditional wooden locks using horizontal bars. The craftsmen at Bokto have also skillfully incorporated mortise and tenon joinery into the details, ensuring that the door not only carries traditional values but also displays a spirit of innovation.

Teak Door Inlaid with Heart Sutra

The interplay of light and dark shades is one of the most beautiful aspects of teak wood grain. The reception room also utilizes Burmese teak as the material of choice. The client commissioned a door featuring carved glass with the Heart Sutra, which, when combined with the teak door frame, creates a serene and elegant effect. The door panel, frame, and supporting structure are all made from solid wood, ensuring overall texture and consistency.

The design of the full glass door not only retains the texture and durability of solid wood furniture but also, through its clever combination with glass, adds a sense of lightness and grace. It showcases the perfect integration of modern and traditional materials.

Flying Apsara Painted Glass Door and Japanese-style Door

Two other doors within the residence employ similar craftsmanship. One of these doors features customer-commissioned flying apsara painted glass, creating a vivid and dynamic aesthetic. The other door is a Japanese-style sliding door made from traditional Japanese paper (washi), offering a simple and bright feel to the space.

Choosing materials is an art in itself. The original hues of wood, whether dark, reddish-yellow, or light, can create distinctly different ambient atmospheres. For example, when it comes to Japanese-style doors, opting for Ash wood, a favorite in Japanese design, naturally achieves an authentic Japanese aesthetic effect.

Through these unique and meticulously designed doors, we have created a diverse living environment and fulfilled the desire for each space to exude its distinct atmosphere.

The client chose to replace common spring or foam mattresses with breathable, natural tatami, creating a drier and more grounded sleeping environment.All dimensions are tailored to the space, including length, width, and height, allowing the bed to fit perfectly and make full use of every inch. 依榻榻米尺寸設計的床架結構我們依照三片榻榻米的放置方式去規劃床架結構，每片下方都設計完整的橫向支撐，讓受力平均、不塌陷。實際踩踏時穩定紮實，床架能穩穩支撐榻榻米與榻榻米之間的重量，使用上更安心。在看不見的床框連接處使用公母榫結合，維持整體俐落外觀，同時確保結構穩固。安裝時則拆分為床架主體、圓腳與三片床板，在不影響強度的前提下，讓搬運與進場更順利，也保留日後使用的彈性。 Structure Designed Based on Tatami Dimensions The bed frame is planned according to the layout of three tatami mats. Each section is supported with full horizontal reinforcements underneath, distributing weight evenly and preventing sagging. The client had many unique requests—and we were excited to bring them all to life! 藤編餐櫃-收納推車及藤編元素餐櫃共分為八個格層，上方為四個抽屜，下方為四個掀門櫃，其中一格特別挖空，為推車預留收納空間，整體使用更靈活、方便。櫃體搭配洗白塗裝，保留木紋質感又有現代感。底部採用圓形實木櫃腳設計，不僅提升整體比例，也方便掃地機器人進出清潔。 Rattan Sideboard – Storage Cart Slot & Handwoven Accent. The sideboard features eight compartments: four drawers on top and four flip-down cabinets below. 使用自家木材改造—肖楠木餐桌 Using Your Own Wood – Incense Cedar Dining Table

繼上次廖先生將自家收藏多年的肖楠木材改造成桌板大獲好評後，這次E在網站上看到我們的修復實例，決定將家中珍藏的肖楠木一枚板交給木島處理，我們安排司機協助收送，為他們新家打造一張獨一無二的餐桌。 Following the success of Mr. Liao’s incense cedar table transformation, another client, E, discovered our restoration projects on our website and decided to entrust Bokto with a cherished single-slab piece of incense cedar from their collection. We arranged pickup and delivery, helping them create a one-of-a-kind dining table for their new home. 木板原始狀況與評估這塊木板雖然擁有歲月累積的紋理與香氣，但一枚板的厚重造型與尺寸略顯不符現代居家使用，加上木板本身有開裂的狀況，除了安全疑慮以外，尺寸也不適合製作一張六人餐桌。經過木島評估後，建議採用「拼板」的方式製作，如此一來能有效保留並活用這塊珍貴的肖楠木材。 Original Condition and Evaluation Although this slab had beautiful grains and a rich natural scent from years of aging, its heavy form and limited dimensions made it impractical for a modern six-person dining table. The slab also had cracks that raised safety concerns. After careful evaluation, Bokto recommended reworking the slab into a panel-style tabletop. This not only preserved the unique character of the wood but also allowed for better usability. 從剖木到拼板木工師傅從剖木開始，依據木材的紋理與裂縫情況，規劃出合適的剖線，彎弧及不適用的裂痕在這個階段會被淘汰，再使用帶鋸剖出所需的寬度與厚度。接著進行刨木，將每片木料刨製成相同厚度，之後再進行拼板與精細研磨，讓桌面平整細緻，展現木紋本色。 From Sawing to Panel Assembly Our craftsmen began by evaluating the wood’s grain and splits to determine optimal cutting lines. Warped or severely cracked sections were removed during this stage. Using a bandsaw, the slab was cut to the required width and thickness. Next came planing, ensuring each piece reached the same thickness, followed by jointing and precision sanding to create a smooth and seamless tabletop that highlights the cedar’s natural grain. 桌腳設計與修色桌腳則搭配溫潤自然的栓木實木，外型設計上採外斜角度，增添視覺上的協調與構造穩定感。桌腳的表面則選用與桌板相近的顏色進行噴漆修色，讓桌子整體顏色相同。特別的是，客人希望能在餐桌下方設置層板，方便收納熱墊、報紙等生活雜物，同時不影響坐姿的腿部空間。因此我們在設計層板高度時將位置調高，且將層板縮窄，確保實用與舒適兼具。 Table Leg Design and Color Matching For the table legs, we used solid ash wood with a gentle natural tone. The legs were angled outward to enhance both visual balance and structural stability. They were then color-matched to the tabletop with a similar-toned finish to ensure harmony across the entire piece. The client also requested a lower shelf under the table for storing heating pads, newspapers, and other everyday items—without interfering with legroom. At Bokto, we refined it further by adding subtle under-beveled edges—not the typical 45-degree chamfer, but a steeper angle closer to vertical. This gives the piece a low-key yet refined elegance. 實木書桌客製－配備隱藏手把與緩衝滑軌 Custom Solid Wood Desk

這張實木書桌是客人為了搭配臥房空間而委託木島製作的，不只作為書桌使用，也能兼作化妝台，一桌多用。整體造型簡約中帶點復古韻味，選用淺色系的栓木（也稱為梣木）製作，木紋清晰、色調溫潤自然，讓人在臥房中也能安心工作與閱讀。實木材質除了耐用，更會隨著時間產生獨特的光澤與色澤變化，越用越有味道。 This solid wood desk was custom-made by Bokto for a client’s bedroom.
