Children’s Chair Restoration

This chair seems like it was specially designed for children in upscale early diners, featuring green faux leather coupled with a dark, thick lacquer that was quite eye-catching at the time. The craftsmanship and solid wood material reveal the designer’s meticulous approach.

The wooden parts of the chair show the distinctive signs of use that only solid wood furniture develops, while the plastic leather has deteriorated. Our goal was to preserve the wood’s texture while transforming it into a durable and simple piece of furniture.

After careful consideration, we decided to remove the heavy dark paint to expose the original wood grain. For the seat cushion, we removed the plastic leather and reupholstered it in black genuine leather. The genuine leather showcases a lychee pattern, adding a classic and durable texture hidden within the black color.

This solid wood children’s chair is durable and elegant, displaying many of the charms unique to old solid wood furniture, with excellent craftsmanship and beautiful design. The chair contains many clever features, such as a slightly widened center in the footrest creating a rainbow-like curve; the back slats extend downward in a manner similar to Windsor chairs, while the U-shaped armrests resemble the circle chairs of Ming-style furniture. These seemingly unnoticeable shapes are the most beautiful craftsmanship and details.

A quality piece of solid wood furniture can last for decades, and this children’s chair shows the designer’s and craftsmen’s care for children in its design.
