The restoration journey of this precious antique cabinet

The old cabinet, owned by a leather workshop proprietor, masterfully blends Western lines with Eastern structures. The traces of hand carvings subtly visible in the details reveal the unique craftsmanship of the artisans of yesteryear. The irregular handcrafted marks add a unique charm to this piece of furniture.

Previously, the top panel of the cabinet had suffered cracks and small holes from being stepped on. Given the natural aging and wear from prolonged use, these damages were inevitable. The owner, who has a deep affection for antique furniture, specifically wanted to preserve its original appearance during restoration.

Here is a photo before the restoration, clearly showing the damage to the top panel.

We offered the client various repair options, and they ultimately chose to replace the entire wooden panel using the same techniques as the original cabinet. After confirmation from Master Wood Island, the replacement material was similar to hemlock, crafted from beams and columns from an old house to form the new top panel for the antique cabinet.

The special feature of this top panel is that its edges are chamfered. Master Wood Island, aiming to recreate delicate forms without dismantling the entire structure, ingeniously replaced the top panel of the antique cabinet. Additionally, he strengthened the support structure at the bottom and manually applied a natural wood protective oil finish.

The image above showcases the furniture after restoration. While preserving its original appearance, it is now more sturdy and durable. The beauty of old furniture lies in the historical traces and stories it carries.
