Introduction
Beech wood, also known as European beech, is part of the light color spectrum, with natural hues ranging from white and pink to grayish-yellow, commonly seen with its straight grain pattern, similar to maple. This type of wood is widely distributed across Europe, America, and Asia. In Taiwan, beech wood is colloquially known as “chicken oil wood,” named for its shiny, polished surface that resembles glistening oil.
The cellular structure of European beech is fine, allowing it to display a very smooth and shiny appearance after polishing. This wood is known for its heft, sturdiness, good strength, and excellent shock resistance, making it suitable for steam bending processes. However, it has relatively weak resistance to decay and insects, and in its natural state, it is susceptible to wood-eating insects like longhorn beetles. Care must also be taken to ensure the wood is properly dried to prevent splitting.
