Introduction
Ebony, a gem in the family of sandalwood, is renowned for its deep, night-like hue—pristine and a natural masterpiece, also known as African ebony or blackwood. Its texture is iron-hard and finely grained, and it displays a natural luster when polished, widely regarded as an extremely durable building material. However, due to the limited size of its trunk, it is rare to see it used in large products.
Ebony is suitable for fine carving, making cue sticks, door handles, knife handles, musical instruments, and other exquisite small home accessories. Its hardness makes processing a technical challenge, causing significant wear on tools. When hard material is essential, and ebony is not available, Taiwan Acacia—commonly known as Taiwanese sandalwood—can also be used to produce high-quality works. For those who prefer dark wood, Kassod tree is another excellent choice.
Originating from the African continent, African ebony faces severe overexploitation due to its high utility value. Apart from some large samples still found in remote areas, it has become a rarity in the market.
