Rosewood

Introduction

Rosewood, specifically referred to here as Indian Rosewood, also known as Red Sandalwood and commonly known as Redwood, has numerous aliases. Although rare, it is used as a substitute for the protected and virtually unobtainable Hainan Huanghuali and the similarly rare and protected Thai Rosewood. These three types of wood belong to the same genus and share similar characteristics in their patterns and textures.

Rosewood is dense and hard, making it one of the world’s most valuable woods. It features an elegant, beautiful grain with rich, reddish hues and varied, wavy patterns, and it emits a pleasant fragrance. It is highly prized for making luxury furniture and decorative materials.

Originally from India and the Indochina peninsula, such beautiful hardwood materials are increasingly scarce today.

Other tropical hardwoods that are becoming scarce include Ebony and African Teak, while in Taiwan, a member of the rosewood family known as Taiwanese Acacia, or Taiwan Rosewood, is available.
