Taiwan Hemlock

Introduction

Taiwan Hemlock, part of the pine family, features white and gray wood grains with distinct variations, and its texture is more refined than that of pine or spruce. Hemlock wood boasts remarkable stability, naturally exhibiting resistance to shrinkage, deformation, and wear, although it is somewhat prone to cracking.

In Taiwan, hemlock was primarily used in the past for pulp production for newspapers and other paper products due to the susceptibility of the tree’s heartwood to rot.

Beyond construction and furniture making, hemlock is also used for creating paneling and railway sleepers. Many of Taiwan’s old wooden houses utilize hemlock, and reclaimed hemlock wood is still repurposed for making other furniture items.

Hemlock is also known as Tsuga, a name given to it by the Japanese. While hemlock is found in regions like Yunnan and North America, Taiwanese Hemlock is a unique species native to Taiwan, underscoring its ecological and cultural significance.
